Recovery Derm Shield Aftercare

What is Recovery Derm Shield?

  • Recovery Derm Shield is a breathable, waterproof adhesive bandage that protects your fresh tattoo while it heals. It locks in your body's natural healing fluids while protecting the tattoo from dirt, bacteria, and friction.

Stage 1: Wearing the Bandage

  • Leave It On

  • Keep the Derm Shield on for at least 24 hours. I recommend leaving it on for 3–5 days as long as the seal remains intact.

Fluid Buildup is Normal

  • It's completely normal to see a dark liquid under the bandage. This is simply a mixture of plasma, ink, and a small amount of blood. Do not try to drain it.

If the Bandage Leaks

  • If the bandage tears, begins leaking, or the seal breaks, remove it immediately and follow the washing instructions below.

Stage 2: Removing the Bandage

  • Wash your hands first using an unscented antibacterial soap such as Dial Gold or Dr. Bronner's.

  • Slowly remove the Derm Shield by stretching it back over itself (parallel to your skin), similar to removing a Command Strip. This is the most comfortable method and helps reduce irritation. Removing it in a warm shower can also help loosen the adhesive.

  • Once removed, gently wash the tattoo with warm water and a fragrance-free antibacterial soap. Pat dry with a clean paper towel and allow the tattoo to air dry completely before applying any lotion.

Stage 3: Daily Care

  • For the remainder of the healing process (approximately 2–3 weeks):

  • Wash your tattoo gently 1–2 times per day.

  • Once the tattoo is completely dry, apply a very thin layer of fragrance-free lotion or tattoo balm as needed.

  • Recommended lotions include Lubriderm, CeraVe, or Jergens.

  • Never apply lotion to a wet tattoo, as moisture can trap bacteria against the skin.

Things to Avoid

  • Do not swim or soak your tattoo (pools, lakes, oceans, hot tubs, or baths) until it is fully healed (about 3–5 weeks).

  • Do not scratch or pick at peeling skin or scabs. If the tattoo becomes itchy, lightly patting or slapping the area is okay.

  • Avoid direct sun exposure while your tattoo is healing.

Questions or Concerns?

  • If you notice excessive redness, unusual irritation, signs of infection, or anything that doesn't seem normal, please contact me before trying any home remedies or over-the-counter treatments. I'd much rather help you early than have a small issue turn into a bigger one.
